How to tune up a 2000 90hp Johnson Outboard
Tuneup on a 2000 90hp Johnson Outboard
Today we are going to go over how to tune a 90Hp Johnson.
Its real simple, there are 4 plugs in there and we have our spark plugs, a fuel gauge to make sure we’ve got the right gap to
for me put these plugs in.
We need a spark plug socket wrench which we have, which is a 13/16 on this engine.
Now, the other thing we are going to do with the tune-up is to change the fuel filter, so I have a Sierra filter and we also have some gas premixed, so we can fill up the front of the off filter, so we don’t have to prime it too much.
We also have an oil filter wrench which is going to help me if it’s a little stuck on, so we can get it off.
So helping me today is going to be my son Colin.
So he’s going to come over here, and he’s going to be doing some tune-up stuff with you.
So we hope you enjoy this, and we are going to get to work.
So we are over at the back of the boat.
Everybody’s been asking questions of where did all those videos go at that time? So here we are properly raising him and teaching them how to work on things.
So, this is 90 Johnson and we’re going to bring it down and start to tune it up. We have the tilt plug over there, then you have to push that up and then bring it down. So we have it on the trailer so it’s up higher so he can bring it down lower.
Ok. Go ahead put it down lower, so it’s straight, now we’re going to have to take off the covers, there are two clips you pull them out and turn them and he’s got one in the front. Lift it.
Alright! so we have two spark plugs on this side and 2 on this side.
It’s a four-cylinder a V4.
So we’re going to start. We are only going to take one wire at a time and one plug at a time so we don’t cross the wires.
So Collins going to get to work on that. He is going to take out the first wire and then he is going to need the socket wrench.
The best way to learn how to take off any kind of nuts and bolts is righty tighty lefty Loosey.
So, it’s a little sponge thing in there. He’s right! but you might have to tap it like that. So hold it. No stop doing that! Hold it, on this side. Hold the bottom! Hold the bottom and push that way.
All right now hold the ratchet. Hold the socket itself. Ok, take it off.
Take the plug out. Ok, first, the thing is to match up the plugs. Make sure they are the same plugs. Ok, do they look the same? The same numbers on it, on a plug itself? – yeah- All right. Give me this plug.
Before you put it in, you got to gap the plug. So we’re going to take the plug, zoom in. we are going to put it on our gage, and it’s 30.
And go right to 30. See that? So now we know the plug has gaped correctly. I always got my plugs because you never know if the box fell off the shelf, or if something happens to it. And it bends the terminal here, so you always want to gap them, So once it’s gapped, we are going to put it in by hand and remember my rules Lefty Loosey righty tighty. So, right now you’re going the wrong way. Now take the socket wrench, ratchet wrench sorry!
Good! Good! you don’t want to strip It or Break It.
Now put the spark plug wire on. No! it is not on all the way.
Yeah! perfect! All right, now take off the other one and will get to work on all these plugs. We got the plugs here, we got the bottom one over here, take it off and turn it by hand.
Here is another important thing; always do your spark plugs by hand, and now you need to check the gap on that.
You need 30. Turn around. Just bend it a little bit up and down. All right. You’re right at 30. Let me see? Right there, Perfect.
All right!
Now I just need to make sure It’s clipped in there good.
All right! that looks good.
So the plugs are done. I mean we don’t need to change the wires, I mean that is a better tune-up to do, but the plugs are done,
so basically this motor is tuned. It’s awesome.
Now, the next thing we have to do is change the fuel filter.
So we’re going to do that and that’s located right over here.
Ok, so we are inside the boat. And we are over by the fuel filter.
The first thing with this fuel filter, is that if I did have a shuttle for the gas, I would shut it off at this time but on this boat, it’s new to us, so we don’t have one, and so we are going to take off this filter, I’m going to prime the other filter by putting some fuel in it and we are going to take this filter off.
I have a little bucket to try and catch it as best I can once the fuel comes out. So, here is the oil filter wrench. You are going to put that on, slip it on with two hands! Ok, that’s the way to do it! You got it!
Go ahead, Push it. Ok, good now that’s loose.
Now you’re going to take it off and now you are going to turn it off.
Just keep it straight! I don’t want no fuel coming out. So we have the old fuel filter. Now, you do want to match up the new one.
Rise this engine, is I’ll take 2-cycle oil, I’ll put it inside of here and then I’ll run the motor, and that will fog it out. So, in this case, I don’t want to use the fuel that’s in here, plus I think the old one from last year. So, I want to use the new fuel. So, right now we got to open up this plastic on it like that.
Another good idea if you had some oil maybe put some oil on the little seal. Ok, but right now we are going to get the two-cycle fuel, that we have right here and it will pour inside the filter make sure this is premixed. Ok
Set the fuel around the gasket. And now you got to put that back in.
Ok, hold it straight. Turn it towards you but don’t strip it, you got to make sure it’s on straight, you don’t want to strip the filter. Just go hand tight with it.
Ok, pump up the ball, to make sure you fill-up the filter all the way.
When the ball is hard, you know it’s filled all the way. So, now we start the engine, you see, we have the ear so we are going to hook the hose up to it and the water is going to be shot out, So we know that’s cooling the motor. I’m going to get the garden hose and hook that up.
The first thing is always to make sure the water is on before you start it.
All right! So Collin is going to put the key in. Turn it to the on position and push it. Seven, eight, nine, ten. Now crank it.
Now, the big thing is you got to make sure the boat is always neutral.
Collin doesn’t like that part. There you go. Hold on. Let’s give it a little rattle. Good.
Okay, it’s the first time of the year so, we will go over to the manual chock inside of here and just put that up and have them crank it.
Alright, I do have a little bit of smoke.
Look at the camera person getting smoked out, that’s because of the oil from the raiser having new oil in it.
But everything is sounding good.
It’s rattling nice. The water is coming out onto my garage.
Ok, guys wi we just tuned up a 4-cylinder Johnson.
That’s pretty easy, even Collin did it and that’s he’s the first time. And he did it. So awesome job!
So I hope this helps you guys out.
I’ll catch you on the next video.
