How To: Change Gear Lube on your Boat
How To: Change Gear Lube
Today we are going to discuss how to change your outdrive fluid, on Bravo III, I have a Rinker
We need simple tools to do that
We will need:
-Flat screwdriver to take the bottom drain out and the vent plug out from the top of the unit, if you are having trouble getting it our you are going to need to use Drive Impact Screwdriver to tap on the bottom to loosen it up and continue with the screwdriver.
-A drain bucket to catch the fluid and gear oil, I am using merc gear lube oil, that is recommended for me check the owners manual or dealer
-you need a special pump it screws on the bottom drain and pump the fluid up to the vent, you can get it at west marine
We go to the back on the unit to see how it is done
On the bottom of the engine of the unit there is a drain plug over there and on the top vent so by loosening the bottom plug so by loosening up with the screwdriver the fluid will come out but when the vent is open it will come out even faster. If you are having some trouble you can also use the drive impact screwdriver you hit it with the hammer and loosen it up.
There is a little seal that is very important it goes on the plug and it keeps the fluid inside so nothing leaks out, as the fluid is stripping out and you are going to loosen the top vent, remember this is the vent and when you are filling it you will see the liquid come out and will know that it is full
On the Mercruiser on bravo 3, there is a reservoir tank up on top thought the season has an alarm that will show you that when the fluid is low and keep the fluid inside the drive as well. fluid coming out it is tick will take some time.
We are also showing you the engine compartment where the Mercruiser is to show you the reservoir for the outdrive which contains the gear oil and what we did is that we put a tweezer on the line to stop the fluid from coming out from the top and to save the fluid inside of here, this is an expensive fluid. this step is optional…
We are almost done with the fluid coming out. So, what we do is connect the pump to the can, and you connect it inside the bottom plug drain hole, it screws in, and pump the fluid up.
you will see it coming out of the to pump that means it is full. This takes a little time you have to pump around 20 min…
After I pump the first quart you pump the second bottle of gear oil lube, repeat the process. I use a rag to clean if I spill, it is oily.
Now, you see the liquid coming out which means it is full and put the plug back make sure the seal is in there.
if it is not in the top one it will suck water in or air, if it is not in the bottom it is going to lose the gear oil and wipe out your drives.
Screw it as fast as you can. Also, remember to check the reservoir after you release the clamp that is there if you went with that option.
It is recommended to check all gear oil and levels of everything before taking the boat out because you can blow your outdrive.
If you have two units you repeat the process in both engines.
